Today we are blanketed with a white wonderland of fresh soft snow. Inside my high tunnel there is a wonderland of its own going on. I have gardening in my blood and fresh vegetables in the middle of January! Today I picked lettuce and broccoli and even though I wanted to pick it badly, I resisted the temptation to pick my first ever cauliflower! It is a beauty, but I think it needs to grow a bit longer. To say that I am excited is an understatement. I have never had any success at growing cauliflower in the spring. I think I will stick to winter production for it from now on. No bugs to deal with and the heat is easy to control. Along with the cauliflower, I have lettuce, carrots, cabbage, spinach, and broccoli. They are covered at night with floating row cover to give them protection from the cold. I pull it back on sunny days. It may be cold outside, but when the sun comes up, the tunnel heats up quick. In addition to working in the tunnel, I always make sure that I take care of the birds when we have a snow. Today I refilled my suet feeders with my homemade suet cakes. You can find the recipe and directions on my Youtube page under "Webster Farms". Very easy to do and very cost effective.
